Program Requirements

If you are a student with junior or senior standing and if you are participating in independent research or working on a scholarly project, you may be eligible to become an Undergraduate Research Scholar. The fall deadline for the 2009-2010 program is Friday, September 25, 2009 at 5 p.m.  Interested students should direct questions to Dr. Robert Webb, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Research, by e-mail ugr@tamu.edu or phone 979-458-0039.


PROGRAM
As a capable undergraduate student, this program enables you to actively participate in independent research projects, encourages you to communicate your research as an author to the research community, makes you more competitive for national fellowships, and prepares you for graduate studies. The program culminates in the submission of an undergraduate thesis, which is deposited into the Repository on the University Libraries website. Success of your project will be recognized by the Office of Undergraduate Research at an awards ceremony in the spring of 2010. 
 

REQUIREMENTS 
To be eligible to participate in the Undergraduate Research Scholars Program you must:

·        have completed at least 60 hours of undergraduate coursework, 24 of which must have been completed at Texas A&M University (or with the approval of your department head). If you are seeking an exemption, please submit a letter from your research advsior along with your application;

·        have and maintain a Texas A&M GPR of 3.0 or higher;

·        obtain approval from your department head or his/her designee; and 


To complete the Undergraduate Research Scholars Program you must: 

  1. Find a member of the faculty conducting research who agrees to serve as your Undergraduate Research Scholar Advisor. 
  2. Submit a research proposal of approximately 1000 words that is approved by your Undergraduate Research Scholar Advisor, your advisor’s department head, and your own department head (if different). Click here for Application Information and Guidelines.
  3. Actively participate in a research project for either (1) two long semesters, (2) one long semester and one 10-week summer term, or (3) two 10-week summer terms. 
  4. Successfully complete a minimum of 6 credit hours devoted to your independent research project in courses such as 484, 485, 491 or 497.
  5. Submit a progress report after the first semester of research to your Undergraduate Research Scholar Advisor and to the Office of Undergraduate Research.
  6. Meet various interim deadlines throughout the semester. 
  7. Submit a manuscript to your Undergraduate Research Scholar Advisor in a format suitable for publication in a professional research or scholarly journal. Manuscripts submitted for the completion of the program will be archived in the Digital Repository through the University Libraries website at Texas A&M University. Click here to visit the Repository to view past Scholars' theses.
  8. Present the results of this work in a public forum. (Most students present their work in the Spring during Student Research Week at Texas A&M.) 
  9. Upon successful completion of the program and approval of your Faculty Advisor you will be presented with a certificate stating that you have earned the designation of Undergraduate Research Scholar at a special ceremony.

 

*Exceptions to the above must be approved by your Undergraduate Research Scholar Advisor, your department head, and the Office of Undergraduate Research.

 

DEADLINE:
For the 2009-2010 Scholars Program, the Office of Undergraduate Research will accept applications until September 25, 2009.
