Role of the Research Advisor in the Scholars Program

Every student in the Undergraduate Research Scholars Program works one-on-one with a faculty member who oversees their research project from the writing of the research proposal in the beginning of the program to the final, polished thesis. This commitment entails:

  • active mentoring of the student’s scholarly endeavor;
  • provision of advice;
  • assistance and feedback in a timely manner on the written drafts of their thesis;
  • and approval of the intellectual content, rigor and written quality of the final thesis.

Communication

The Office of Undergraduate Research will email the Scholars directly with reminders of deadlines, dates and workshops, as well as any feedback on their thesis drafts or answers to their questions.  The Scholar is responsible for keeping his/her research advisor updated on their progress and any issues they run into. Research advisors will receive email communication from the Office of Undergraduate Research only on high priority issues such as an invitation to an event with an RSVP requested. Due to the volume of emails sent out and the number of Scholar/Advisor pairs managed by the Office of Undergraduate Research, research advisors are not copied on select email communications. Advisors and their students are encouraged to keep the lines of communication open.
