Payment of Tuition/Fees and Stipends

by matt_voss last modified 2008-02-01 1800

There is not a standard process for paying the tuition and fees of REU students at Texas A&M University. Some REU programs choose to pay their students through Payroll Services and others choose to go through the Scholarship Office, which allows for in-state tuition through out-of-state competitive scholarship tuition waivers.

If students were employed at Texas A&M University during the Spring semester before their REU program, they must be paid through Payroll Services, which takes deductions out of the stipend. Some programs choose to put all of their students on payroll in order to pay all students the same amount. Paying students through Payroll Services also allows for students to be covered by workman’s comp.

Example: Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences REU

The Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences REU program pays their students' stipends and food allowance through vouchers, and they set-up scholarships to cover tuition/fees and housing.

Vouchering is the electronic payment method in TEES' EPIK system.  It is the same method as paying an invoice. The departmental secretary at Wildlife & Fisheries Sciences prepares vouchers every two weeks to process the payment of the stipends and a weekly food allowance. In other words, students receive a check every two weeks to cash for spending money and food.  Students receive $300/week for the stipend and $70.60/week for the food allowance.

For scholarships, Michele Carter (REU coordinator) prepares the paperwork for the out-of-state competitive scholarship tuition waivers and the scholarship account payment request. Dr. Honeycutt signs the paperwork, and then Ms. Carter turns it into the Scholarship Office with a memo explaining the REU program and a request for the waiver.  Susie Banks is Ms. Carter’s contact at the Scholarship Office. Once again, this scholarship transfer includes tuition/fees and housing.  Ms. Carter also prepares a memo to the director of Housing to request a waiver of the application fees and deposits.
